Last week, I had an opportunity to play this thing (which belongs to local orchestra): Xylorimba. Apparently it's a combination of marimba and xylophone. It resembles vibraphone because of the tubes; these tubes are giving it more loudness and a bit of a sustain. I fell in love with the thing; it's freaking HUGE like a Hammond organ (and just as pricey). The sounds is wooden in nature rather than metallic. Do you know any artists that were using such a thing? (aside Steve Reich). Also, do you know any somewhat similar instruments which are not expensive as hell? I would really like to get something like that one day. |

Most mallet instruments are expensive as hell. You could probably make your own if you were willing to invest dozens and dozens of hours and a decent chunk of money as well
