New Release Round-up,Vinyl Round-Up - 22nd November 2024

by Matt Groom

As rain lashes the window, and the nights have drawn in, it's the perfect season to dust off the turntable and spend some quality time with your vinyl collection, and filling in all those gaps you never knew you had. The ideal time to run a vinyl reissues round-up then!

First, we spend some time with the Miles Davis Quintet in Paris on a pair of releases from the mid-sixties, when the group was truly finding its mojo. This is followed by the first vinyl release of Diana Krall’s major-label debut, Only Trust Your Heart. McCoy Tyner and Joe Henderson’s bracing Live at Slugs’ Saloon from 1966 makes its first-ever appearance, courtesy of Jack DeJohnette’s archive. From Blue Note, we have Bobby Hutcherson’s fantastic Dialogue, featuring some superb Sam Rivers abstractions, and also Clifford Jordan’s Cliff Jordan and Duke Pearson’s Wahoo! We close with a Soundway Records compilation exploring Nigeria’s fusion of highlife, juju, and modern technology in the 1980s.

This 2LP set showcases Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet live in Paris, October 1, 1964, with Wayne Shorter newly onboard. Spanning two concerts, the 90+ minutes of unreleased music highlight the quintet's fiery chemistry. The performances reflect the deep bond between Miles and the French audience, contrasting their reception at home.

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

Miles in France 1963 & 1964, the eighth installment in the Miles Davis Bootleg Series, captures the Second Great Quintet’s evolution in 1963-64. Spanning five performances across 8 LPs, this set highlights the group’s bold innovation and emotional depth during a pivotal moment, as they redefined the boundaries of modern jazz.

Available Format: 8 Vinyl Records

Diana Krall’s Only Trust Your Heart, her second album and major label debut, is now available on LP for the first time. Featuring Stanley Turrentine, Ray Brown, Christian McBride, and Lewis Nash, it includes classics like “I Love Being Here With You.” Mastered by Bernie Grundman from original analogue tapes.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Forces of Nature: Live At Slugs'

McCoy Tyner and Joe Henderson

This newly unearthed 1966 live recording features McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Henry Grimes, and Jack DeJohnette at NYC’s legendary Slugs' Saloon. Captured by famed engineer Orville O’Brien, the tape, stored in DeJohnette’s archives for nearly 60 years, is now released, produced by Zev Feldman and the DeJohnettes.

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

Dialogue

Bobby Hutcherson

Bobby Hutcherson’s 1965 debut Dialogue highlighted his adventurous spirit, leading a stellar sextet with Freddie Hubbard, Sam Rivers, Andrew Hill, Richard Davis, and Joe Chambers. This Tone Poet Vinyl Edition, mastered by Kevin Gray from analog tapes, features 180g vinyl, deluxe gatefold packaging, and Joe Harley’s expert production.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Wahoo

Duke Pearson

Released in 1964, Duke Pearson’s Wahoo! is a standout blend of his compositional and leadership prowess. Featuring Donald Byrd, Joe Henderson, and James Spaulding, the album delivers memorable tracks like “Amanda” and “ESP.” This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition offers all-analog sound, mastered by Kevin Gray, on 180g vinyl.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Cliff Jordan

Clifford Jordan

Tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan’s 1957 Blue Note session Cliff Jordan highlights his often over-looked artistry alongside a stellar septet featuring Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, and Ray Bryant. This mono Tone Poet Vinyl Edition, mastered by Kevin Gray from analog tapes, offers audiophile sound on 180g vinyl, packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

A now for something a little left-field, this Soundway Records release compiles nineteen tracks from a transformative era in Nigeria, where drum machines, synthesizers, reggae, jazz, and soul fused with highlife and juju. This period of innovation saw artists blending new technology with cultural traditions. The triple vinyl LP features a gatefold design, an 8-page booklet with liner notes, and rare photos. As ever Soundway Records curates with real taste, and unearths some total gems... that you can dance to!

Available Format: 3 Vinyl Records
