New Release Round-up,New Release Round-Up - 28th March 2025by Maddy Allison From jazz fusion to reinterpetations of ECM classic albums, this week certainly has a lot to offer in terms of new releases. Starting off, Billy Marrows and his 12-piece chamber ensemble Grande Família release their sold-out concert recording at London’s Pizza Express Jazz Club with The Penelope Album, all in support of World Child Cancer. Michael Bladt and the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra demonstrate the finest sounds that the Danish jazz fusion scene can offer, inspired by the likes of Snarky Puppy and the Brecker Brothers, in Shapeshifter and the Brandon Marsalis Quartet undertake Keith Jarrett’s 1974 album Belonging in a reinterpretation album of the same name. Finally, up and coming jazz musicians and Jazz FM 2025 nominees Emma Rawicz (saxophone) and Sultan Stevenson (piano) deliver their new respective albums: Rawicz in Big Visit alongside pianist Gwilym Simcock and Stevenson in El Roi, continuing to delve into his sense of faith and identity through music. Recorded at London’s Pizza Express at a sold-out concert, guitarist Billy Marrows and his 12-piece Grande Família deliver their debut recording in The Penelope Album, released in memory of Marrows’ mother Penny and her battle with cancer. Initially just compositions for guitar, Marrows arranged his pieces for the full band, adding new colour and depth. With a sound inspired by Weather Report, Gil Evans and Leonard Bernstein the album is full of subtly executed dynamism, showcasing Marrows’ new voice on the jazz scene. Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV Tenor saxophonist Michael Bladt joins forces with Aarhus Jazz Orchestra in jazz fusion debut Shapeshifter. Influenced by the likes of Snarky Puppy (the links don’t end there - Snarky Puppy’s Bill Laurance was an artistic sparring partner throughout the process), the album is full of compositions that have been arranged by a member of the orchestra. The epitome of Danish jazz fusion, Shapeshifter promises to deliver sonic soundscapes and tight arrangements that will please any fusion fan. Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV Nominated for Jazz FM’s Instrumentalist of the Year, saxophonist Emma Rawicz is joined by pianist Gwilym Simcock in their new musical collaboration Big Visit. A selection of compositions by both musicians, their chemistry comes from shared influences and a willingness to explore new spaces together. With Rawicz describing the lead up sessions to the recording ones of ‘freewheeling wild abandon’, this album is surely the start of a fruitful musical partnership. Available Format: CD An album that explores themes of faith and identity, El Roi (meaning "God of Sight" in Hebrew) is the new album from rising star, Sultan Stevenson. Influenced by jazz musicians such as McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock, Stevenson's compositions capture an intimate trio sound. Also featuring dynamic guest collaborations (including Josh Short on trumpet and Soweto Kinch on saxophone), Stevenson continues the journey he began with his debut album Faithful One - reflecting the relationship with his faith and cultural heritage. Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV A re-interpretation of Kieth Jarrett’s 1974 album of the same name, saxophonist Brandon Marsalis returns 6 years after his last album with his new release Belonging. Making their Blue Note debut, the Brandon Marsalis Quartet are faithful to the ECM original whilst also standing out in their own right. Alongside Marsalis are trusted and long-standing ensemble members Joey Calderazzo on piano, Eric Revis on bass and Justin Faulkner on drums.
