I saw that this morning too. Great voice, he could sing about his breakfast and still sound profound.

Discovered him less than a year ago, being utterly charmed by I'm New Here, and now he's gone. RIP

Very sad, huh? He had such a sharp way with words. Insightful being an understatement. I've been trying to find his first spoken word album at a decent price for a while actually. Lots to enjoy in the meantime though, like this, one of my favs from Winter in America

Hi,
Was aware of him in the late 60's and early 70's as he did do some tours and shows and he was not exactly unknown in the LA area, or SF area at all.
There is one problem ... he was doing rap in 1968 and you can see him doing it in the film "Performance" and he is in the Film Soundtrack, however, by the time you listen to those lyrics, the first thing you are going to say is ... wow ... and today's rap music, still is not big enough to do, write, and sing, what Gil did then, and was known for.
The lyrics, in that piece are extremely right on, and were not discussing "black power" like other groups were at the time, but they were discussing the power one can be as a man, and a person ... which too many stars today doing rap, blues and other music ... still are not able, or willing, to do something that strong and that powerful.
