Setting up a space where we can discuss and share stuff about/on/by 'The Angry Man of Jazz' himself.
Of late I've been listening to http://www.jazzmusicarchives.com/charles-mingus--mingus-plays-piano.aspx" rel="nofollow - Mingus Plays Piano a lot and thought I should recommend it to any fans who haven't come across it, or anyone who likes solo piano. As I only just got this album very recently it's pretty exciting to hear him just playing piano.
Here's the first piece from the album.

I like the album "Money Jungle" that he did with Max Roach and Ellington. I just bought "The Clown", still checking it out. His big band music is awreet.

Money Jungle especially sounds interesting - do we have that here under Roach or Ellington? I haven't got The Clown yet, still only own 4 of his - all Post Bop - though the Black Saint... certainly has a big-ish band feel.
EDIT: Found it, that sounds like one hell of an album!

I am not mad on Money Jungle but "Mingus Ah Um", I like. I only have three of his albums. I was actually looking at Clowns too recently on vinyl. I have not heard that many of his albums, It is getting to find the time first. If he had of recorded at Blue Note, "well, different story" still Money Jungle was recorded there. "It is a good album more to do with my personal taste though. Very fussy with my trios".
My fave Duke though is Live at Newport with the Gonsalves solo, wow. I love that early composition "East Saint Louis Toodle-doo". Steely Dan covered it on "Pretzel Logic"

I have 'Ah Um' too - another classic. Yes! Time to hunt is nearly as big a problem as the money to actually buy it!
The re-recordings Mingus did on 'Mingus, Mingus, Mingus...' includes an even more raucous version of 'Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul' - can't find it on youtube at the moment, but there's a sample on amazon, doesn't do it justice of course, but http://www.amazon.com/Mingus/dp/B000003N7Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1326420946&sr=1-1" rel="nofollow - here it is anyway !

Actually, I find that; so far, the other oftent-cited Mingus classics (like those mentioned in this thread) are really not quite as awesome or successful as Black Saint...
Does anyone know of another Mingus album that is really close sonically to BD&TLS??
A bit like Meditations, Transition or First Meditations would be the closest cousins to A Love Supreme...

Closest cousins? Maybe Mingus Dynasty? Or Tijuana Moods or possibly something like Let My Children Hear Music?

I've ordered it myself but haven't heard it yet - so not sure if I've steered you right or not, but it's supposed to have a bit of a soundtrack vibe - and I can see 'The Black Saint...' as being a soundtrack to something film noir, so there might be a link.
With 'Let My Children...' I've read a few reviews and - one of them by darkprinceofjazz on our site - and it sounds ace. It might have some relation to BS...
I'm very jealous of your library - mine is pitifully small compared to some of the amazing stuff you have access too

Continuing my Mingus obsession of late, here's one from an album that I've recently ordered 'Mingus Dynasty' - which is meant to have a few moments that are kind of 'soundtrack'-ish. Sounds good to me.

Excellent - added to my list of Mingus to collect. Looks like we have the 62 one here but not 64 at a glance. If we don't have the 1964 one I'll add it later tonight too - ADDED

Very cool! I hope that 'Let My Children Hear Music' is as enjoyable too - I have Dynasty now and there's some great stuff on it indeed.

Indeed, Mingus was the man!
My intro to Jazz, really, at age 13 after watching a PBS special....
Essential albums: Mingus Ah Um, Blues and Roots, New Tijuana Moods....Black Saint and Sinner Lady.
Pithicanthropus, and the Clown, are both earlier and cool, too. Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus is worthwhile.
Also Mingus at Antibes is amazing, and the Mingus/Dolphy Complete Bremen Concert is amazing, though the sound is not the best....I also like Three of Four Shades of Blues, and Cumbia and Jazz Fusion, though lots of "purists" despise them...

Ah, the 'purist' there's a word that makes me shudder! Classics, indeed - I just reviewed 'The Black Saint...' after a long time of putting it off, and I love 'Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus' too - you should review 'Mingus at Antibes' - I haven't heard it yet. Will go and investigate it now

A fantastic album, in a way, almost like a warm up (if more 'upbeat') for the kind of things he would achieve on TBS&TSL

I've got to check that one out.
As it currently stands Pithecanthropus is my second favourite, after Black Saint which is possibly the best jazz album ever.
Money Jungle, Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus and Oh Yeah! are also magnificent

^ It's definitely worth it, for sure.
And I have to get 'Money Jungle' one day too - with you on 'M, M,M,M,M' too, that's ace. I wouldn't have thought that some of those pieces sound better, but they just do

If you're coming from prog (which of course you're not, uh!?! ), I'd suggest Back Sant And The Sinner Lady... The whole album can be thought of as a concept or at least it has a strong continuity with one riff constantly coming back throughout the album's course
Ah Hum is fine, Dynasty, Tijuana are also among his better...

Listened to both suggestions, Saint and Sinnner Lady is best album album and its like some noir soundtrack for an old 40s film - very atmospheric and obviously a masterpiece of jazz. Very nice cool full on jazz.....

Yes! It's a work of art - possibly my favourite jazz album, though it's hard to say. It makes me wish I was a film maker so I could use it, damn!

Yeah! Go Charlie boy!
Here's an except from an open letter to Miles, from a downbeat issue - I found it interesting and must find out what he said re: that particular Blindfold Test:
It seems so hard for some of us to grow up mentally just enough to
realize that there are other persons of flesh and bone, just like us, on
this great, big earth. And if they don't ever stand still, move, or
"swing," they are as right as we are, even if they are as wrong as hell
by our standards. Yes, Miles, I am apologizing for my stupid
"Blindfold Test." I can do it gladly because I'm learning a little
something. No matter how much they try to say that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Brubeck" rel="nofollow - Brubeck doesn't swing — or whatever else they're stewing or whoever else they're brewing — it's factually unimportant.
Not because Dave made Time magazine — and a dollar — but mainly because
Dave honestly thinks he's swinging. He feels a certain pulse and plays a
certain pulse which gives him pleasure and a sense of exaltation
because he's sincerely doing something the way he, Dave Brubeck, feels
like doing it. And as you said in your story, Miles, "if a guy makes you
pat your foot, and if you feel it down your back, etc.," then Dave is
the swingingest by your own definition, Miles, because at Newport and
elsewhere Dave had the whole house patting its feet and even clapping
its hands....

I have to be a member of this society for sure. I've been into Mingus for over 20 years. Was first introduced to him by WKCR, the New York City radio station. Speaking of which, they will be doing a 24 hour Mingus birthday broadcast on April 22, see www.wkcr.org. Some of my favorites are his solo piano, the Clown, A Modern Jazz Symposium of Music and Poetry, Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Tijuana Moods, Ah Um, Blues and Roots. Has anyone read his Beneath The Underdog?
