Once again the Fania label has changed hands. This will be the fourth time that this has happened. The Masucci family owned them until 2005 and released practically the entire 1500 in catalogue. Then Emusica bought them and released a few hundred and most were all the populars, like Willie Colon, Ray Barretto, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Richie Ray etc, and then some of those had another re-releaseConfused Codigo took over next (2009)and they seemed to concentrate on a lot of comps but still they did release a few rare ones that have long been out of print and of course more re-issues of the popular artists on the label with many already having been released by Emusica a few years previous.

The new distrubuter is Red. No idea who they are but I hope they release the stuff that is so long out of print, Some of the Larry Harlow's, Charlie Palmieri and Alegre All Stars when Charlie was at Alegre doing all those fab Charanga and jam albums. The Frankie Dante stuff is another. The Louie Cruz album that Ray Barretto did with him. TNT Band, Marty Galagarza, Louie Ramirez, Joe Cuba and the list goes on of material that has disappeared.

This is the most prestigous Latin label and Fania's history is so inter-twined with the sixties and seventies  scene. They had their own thing going the Latin community and it was primarily in New York. Fania has such a wonderful catalogue with many classics. Lets hope the new company do a proper job and treat all this wonderful music with the respect that it truly deserves.
