All right - this might be entirely unreasonable, due to the massive, massive, massive amount of solos available in jazz music, but any thoughts about/ vids or links to your favourite solo?
There's half a dozen that come to mind but I don't know if I can choose even just two. Will see if I can find youtube links and try.
One for now - though whether it's a solo or just the whole piece itself - Albert Ayler's version of Summertime

Nothing too heavy here, but one of my all-time favorite solos is AG guitarist Pete Cosey's goofy countryfied solo on this Hacock/Mayfield pop hit. Cosey enters at 4:30 and also towards the end of the song too.

^ wild guitar sound too - really jangly but 'electric' too (meaning the word in its non-obvious manner)

Its probably some kind of guitar synth, very odd sound in its time.

From the top of my head, this is one of my fave piano solos (near the end):

Something a little more substantial this time, Coltrane plays "Mr PC", notice how he opens with a psuedo classical Bach type figure and then bases much of his solo around that. These sort of psuedo-classical runs would of course become popular with metal guitarists in later years.

Does the vocal section of Acknowledgment from A Love Supreme count? because that's what I want to say. For some reason I always think of vocal tracks from non-vocal artists )bop-type stuff) as solos
Like this
Anywho, this one features some incredible piano work, and the bass fill/solo/interlude thing blows me away.
Anything Jean Louis.
really there are about 10 billion things I want to mention
How about some Mingus? The playing starting around about the 10 minute mark here is to die for.

^ I reckon vocals count for sure, still an instrument huh?
Awesome everyone, keep 'em coming! I love that Zappa one and Time Out, and I definitely need to get that Chick album, it's one of the ones I've been after for a while, can't believe I haven't got it yet. Quite remiss of me

Yes, I've definitely heard that style with so much metal guitar. Will go and put Giant Steps on now actually!

That FZ solo is an excellent candidate for my favorite guitar solo.
I'm honestly not too sure what to say, so I'll go for the obvious...Take Five drum solo.
------------- Hit it on Five.
Saxophone Scatterbrain Blitzberg
Stab them in the ears.

^ Yeah, drum solos are often a tough sell for me but I do like that one too.
Another one from me - this time piano - Hank Jones, at around 8:30 is a wonderful minute, I like the way the rest of the band leaves off for him to start it

This is a tough tough question, but after some consideration my gut is telling me McCoy Tyner's piano solo on Coltrane's My Favorite Things. Grant Green's solo on It Ain't Necessarily so is badass too, as is John Tropea's solo on the Deodato tune December 13.

Frank Zappa weilds a mean guitar too, I'd say my favorite solo of his is eith "Sharleena" from the lost episodes or "Black Napkins" from the Eyes of Osaka

This isn't a solo, per se, but the fills Ahmad Jamal does on "If I Find You Again" are amazing.

Will have to check that out, Hurbert, looking forward to it. I saw your review on the front page too, sounds like a great album

I love that McCoy solo there too - one of my other fav McCoy moments is on Aisha from 'Ole' - and Tropea great on December 13!
