UK artist Emma-Jean Thackray has shared plans for new album ‘Weirdo’.
The composer blends the freedom of jazz with the impact of club culture, constructing a swirling morass of unexpected influences. Able to move from rock raunch through to the cry of free jazz, Emma-Jean Thackray is one of the country’s broadest and most exciting voices.
https://emmajeanthackray.lnk.to/weirdo" rel="nofollow - Out on April 25th , new album ‘Weirdo’ is an epic 19-tracker, complete with a range of special guests.
Emma-Jean Thackray will launch the album at London’s Hoxton Hall on May 14th, while the album is led by new single ‘Wanna Die’.
Matching the technical exuberance of jazz fusion with the heft of alt culture, ‘Wanna Die’ is a message of survival, with Emma-Jean Thackray letting her thoughts pour out on record.
The video is a hoot – scripted by Thackray and co-directed with Nick Suchak, it’s a surreal homage to 1970s television performances, with a cameo from Gilles Peterson as the charismatic host.
Emma-Jean Thackray plays each role, too – somewhere between Weezer’s ‘Buddy Holly’ video and the Fast Show’s Jazz Club sketch.
She comments…
“I think we need to talk about the dark shit in our heads, and finding the humour in it only makes that easier. The lyrics to this are very diary-esque, like confessional poetry, and the bare emotion of it is balanced out with lush jazz harmony, sweeping synths, and a pop punk silliness. When you centre in on the silliness it’s easier to speak on your pain, and easier for others to hear it.”
Tune in now.
