New Release Round-up,New Release Round-Up - 14th February 2025

by Maddy Allison

Love is in the air for all things jazz this Valentine's Day! Famous Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick presents his new quartet album Lullaby, only weeks after the release of Benjamin Lackner’s new album  https://www.prestomusic.com/jazz/products/9735890--benjamin-lackner-spindrift" rel="nofollow - Spindrift , on which he was featured. Saxophonist Jordan Vanhemert returns to his childhood inspiration Charlie Parker in Deep in the Soil, and Elliot Galvin pushes boundaries in his experimental album The Ruin. Talented bassist John Patitucci delivers a spiritually driven trio album with Spirit Fall, drawing on his playing experience alongside legends such as Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Our last release from Mama Terra also draws on the legendary music of Hancock in Chameleons: Live Interpretations of Herbie Hancock, an innovative take on the great compositions with plenty of unexpected twists.

No stranger to ECM, Mathias Eick presents his next album with the label, Lullaby. Known for his soothing and wistful sound on the trumpet, Eick captures his most improvisatory and exploratory music to date as he’s joined by his esteemed quartet members: Kristjan Randalu on piano, Ole Morten Vågan on double bass, and Hans Hulbækmo on drums. Full of melancholic lyricism and slow builds, Eick presents an album inspired by the ECM sound of the 70s and an acoustic set-up.

Korean-born saxophonist Jordan Vanhemert is inspired by the icon Charlie Parker and trades his usual tenor for an alto on his new album, Deep in the Soil. Adventurous and full of energy, there are echoes of Cannonball Adderley and The Jazz Messengers in this bop album as Vanhemert delivers a strong performance alongside a high class ensemble.

With an emphasis on experimentation and exploration, Elliot Galvin presents The Ruin alongside Naïve Records. A series of soundscapes and improvisations, based on Angelo-Saxon poetry and ideas coming full circle, Galvin creates a musical representation of how he feels living in England. Driven by piano, electronics and strings, The Ruin captures all kinds of moods and spectrums, artfully crafting a musical journey in just over ten tracks.

In his Edition Record debut bassist John Patitucci joins forces with Chris Potter on saxophone and Brian Blade on drums in Spirit Fall. An album that has spiritual growth at its heart, the trio embark on emulating that New York trio sound (inspired by the likes of Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson and John Coltrane) and blending intricate melody and rhythms together.

Recorded live at the Glasgow International Jazz Festival in 2024, the ensemble of Mama Terra create a fresh take on the classic tunes of Herbie Hancock in Chameleons: Live Interpretations of Herbie Hancock. Not to imitate but to explore new ground, the group take Hancock’s pieces and use them as a springboard for new musical directions and improvisations, all whilst paying tribute to Hancock himself.
