As explained in an official description of Sentient, Carlos compiled the album and sequenced the tracks “in a way that allows a new and dramatic story to emerge.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer noted in a statement, “I’m always driven by passion, emotion and inner instinct. When I first heard these tracks floating around in the house, I said, ‘Why don’t we put these all in one place?’”

The album’s lead single is an alternate version of “Please Don’t Take Your Love,” which features Santana collaborating with Robinson. The soulful, seductive tune originally appeared on Smokey’s 2009 album, Time Flies When You’re Having Fun. The Sentient version features a previously unheard guitar solo by Carlos.

“I went to the studio and did my own thing,” Santana explained about his guitar part. “I said, ‘Let’s just roll it.’ I did another take with Smokey sort of guiding me. Smokey loved them both, so he wound up combining the two. What’s on Sentient is the first version.”

The track is available now via digital formats and streaming.

On March 14, a live instrumental rendition of the 1995 Michael Jackson song “Stranger in Moscow” will be released as the second advance track from Sentient. Santana recorded the tune in 2007 with producer/drummer Narada Michael Walden’s band.

“Narada knew that I loved the song, so he arranged it with his band,” Santana recalled. “I showed up and we played it with no rehearsal. I’m basically singing it with my guitar. I’m visualizing Michael Jackson and what he would do—I got pretty close. I think when Michael listened to it, wherever he is, he smiled and said, ‘Yeah, that’s it.’”

A third advance track from the album will be released on March 17. “Get On” is a song featuring Santana and Miles Davis that first appeared on jazz composer/pianist Paolo Rustichelli’s 1996 album Mystic Man.

Sentient also features another collaboration with Jackson, “Whatever Happens.” That track originally appeared on Jackson’s chart-topping final studio album, Invincible, which was released in 2001.

About Santana’s Injury

In early January, Santana’s manager announced that the guitarist had broken the pinkie on his left hand in an accidental fall at his home in Hawaii. The injury forced Carlos to postpone an eight Las Vegas residency shows running from January 22 through February 2. Rescheduled dates are expected to be announced soon.
