Like we or not, it's a tradition at the end of each year to overlook what great new music we listened during last 12 months. I'm sure we'll hardly find a single person who is familiar with all what have been released, so all such lists are based on a) personal taste and b) the number of new albums everyone of has listened from huge amount of new jazz releases. My opinion is based on love to advanced jazz and 100+ new releases I heard. Here we go:

1. Roscoe Mitchell - "Conversations"
2. Wadada Leo Smith - "The Great Lakes"
3. Rodrigo Amado - "Wire Quartet"
4. John Hebert - "Floodstage"
5. Wadada Leo Smith / George Lewis / John Zorn - "Sonic Rivers"

Trio 3 + Vijay Iyer - "Wiring"
Wadada Leo Smith / Jamie Saft / Joe Morris / Balasz Pandi - "Red Hill"
Mary Halvorson - "Reverse Blue"
Anna Webber - "Simple"
Jemeel Moondoc - "The Zookeeper's House"

Few more albums need to be mentioned as really strong (I will complete this list probably in few steps):

Mary Halvorson - "Thumbscrew"
Tyshawn Sorey - "Alloy"
Sylvie Courvoiser - "Double Windsor"

There were a lot of great albums this year, three that stood out for me were:
Matthew Shipp     "Root of Things"
Tohpati          "Tribal Dance'
Eric Hofbauer      "The Rite of Spring"

I'll have to do a search...somehow, but my favorite will probably wind up being Peter Evan's Quintet's Destination Void.

-------------
Hit it on Five.

Saxophone Scatterbrain Blitzberg

Stab them in the ears.
