In honor of its 40th anniversary, in 2014, Bimhuis established Bimhuis Radio, its radio channel that streams live concerts for free on the web. The renowned Amsterdam music venue has now means of reaching out to audiences worldwide to fulfill its mission to promote jazz, impro and world music to the broadest audience possible.
Bimhuis is not only among the first venues in the European scene to broadcast concerts, but also one of the few to do so worldwide (New York jazz venues such as Smalls and Jazz at Lincoln Center are other examples).
“Bimhuis Radio affords people from all around the world the precious opportunity of listening to concerts that are happening far away. It supports jazz, impro & music lovers, students and musicians who wish to keep up to date with the international jazz scene” says Jurre Wieman, Head of technical department at Bimhuis and coordinator of Bimhuis Radio. More Than Just Concerts The selection of concerts which Bimhuis Radio presents, reflects the wide range of the Bimhuis programming: from free jazz to modern jazz, bebop to world music, national to international musicians and established artists to up and coming talents.
Apart from the concert itself the musicians featured in the show are also invited for a talk either before the concert or during the break between the first and the second set. This often results in animated conversations and colorful stories thanks Bimhuis Radio hosts Vera Vingerhoeds and Koen Schouten, both well known in the Dutch jazz scene. They also ask artists to select one of their favorite tracks they would like played on the program.
Excellent Sound Quality Listening to Bimhuis Radio is almost as good as being there in person. It evokes the lively atmosphere of the beloved venue in the heart of Amsterdam without compromising the sound quality. During the live concert one of the Bimhuis’ top sound engineers mixes the sound from the Bimhuis Recording Studio. How it works, all steps explained - On average, the Bimhuis selects 5 concerts per month to be streamed on Bimhuis Radio.
