I realize this is a bit of a goofy request but I was wondering if anyone had any input for jazz albums to play at night while driving.

The factors at play are:
  • Something suited for the nighttime, so something described as 'romantic/intimate' or maybe 'lonely'
  • Can't be too delicate/quiet or the road noise will overpower the music

Grant Green's Idle Moments might be a good one except it's a tad quiet.

Any thoughts on this?

Miles Davis      "Quiet Nights"
For a night time fusion experience, try side 4 of Miles' "Agharta".
Brad Mehldau's recent mega solo piano release.

For something more old school, a mostly ballad album by Coleman Hawkins or Chet Baker.
Also, those lengthy slow blues jams by Jimmy Smith.

I'm sure there's plenty more.

Where should I look in Jimmy Smith's discography?

This Blue Note compilation is great:

Or look for the album with the 20 minute version of "The Serman", the album may have the same name.

I've liked John Zorn's mystic series for this purpose. (At The Gates Of Paradise, In Search Of The Miraculous, The Goddess, A Vision In Blakelight)

I suspect alot of early Coltrane would fit the bill too (such as Lush Life or Blue Train).

Hit it on Five.

Saxophone Scatterbrain Blitzberg

Stab them in the ears.
