Two decades ago US reedist Tim Berne did his name as new "angry man" of a free jazz generation. For some last years he records for ECM interesting new adventurous jazz of today. Berne mixes avant-garde, chamber jazz and modern composition now, his upcoming new album "Incidentals" isn't much different. Tim's collaborators here are: Oscar Noriega (clarinet),Ches Smith(drums, vibes, timpani),Ryan Ferreira (el.guitar),Matt Mitchell(piano, electronics) with second guitarist David Torn on two tracks

Super hot and very modern post bop by George Colligan, you can hear the whole album right here. As they say, this is not your father's post bop:
Dylan Taylor plays a mix of fusion tracks and post bop tracks on this live in the studio recording that features Mike Clarke and Larry Coryell. This was one of Larry's last recordings.

Tobias Delius plays classic 'beep squawk' free jazz with many moments of quiet sensitivity, which are not unusual in today's post Art Ensemble of Chicago free jazz.

^ Afro-Cuban jazz is going through a lot of changes lately and is transforming into something increasingly abstract. Complex arrangements and rhythms have always been a part of Afro-Cuban jazz, but these qualities are being accelerated and there is an increasing dialog and cross influence happening between Afro-Cuban jazz and other 21st century jazz genres. Many modern jazz artists from any genre are turning to Afro-Cuban jazz for a rhythmic influence.

Tobias Meinhart plays a modern hybrid of post bop and fusion, you can hear four entire songs at this website.
Hear and Now is a three woman string trio that combines avant-garde jazz with contemporary concert hall music, as well as folk and blues from around the world. The end result is very original and heartfelt music.

One among most creative today's jazz drummer and composer Tyshawn Sorey just released his new album. After success of his previous album "The Inner Spectrum Of Variables" , massive double-CD work recorded by sextet, on his new release Sorey returns to his more regular trio format with pianist Corey Smythe and double bassist Chris Tordini. Grove-less,dark, in moments meditative music steps close to chamber avant-garde as never before
Arturo O'Farrill and Chucho Valdes pay tribute to their musically talented fathers on this Afro-Cuban big band extravaganza. Complex ensemble work and mind-blowing piano solos are all part of the package.

Sloth Racket plays avant-garde jazz rooted in the sounds of classic free jazz, but they use techniques such as graphic notation to build their compositions. The pieces range from collections of minute sounds to sections of greater intensity. Expect to hear all the different sounds and effects a saxophone can produce.
Guilhelm Flouzat is usually known for his contemporary originals, on his new album he decided to take on a different challenge and record some lesser known standards with pianist Sullivan Fortner and bassist Desmond White. Their take on these tunes is refreshingly original and personal. Fortner definitely has his own voice, but he may sometimes recall Ahmad Jamal in his relaxed approach.
Jason Stein walks a fine line between modern post bop and the avant-garde with shades of Lennie Tristano, Ornette and Erik Dolphy to boot. No filler or gimmicks, pure jazz for those who like it that way. The double horn solos with Keefe Jackson are a gas!
Avant-garde drummer and band leader, Tiziano Tononi, presents far out big band versions of classic Allman Brothers songs. Very exciting and kinetic music.

Brian McCarthy and his nonet play post bop versions of songs from the US civil war
Joao Barradas plays far from what you might expect from an accordion player on this very modern and eclectic first outing. Greg Osby is also on board, which might give you a hint of the level of musicianship involved here
Pasajero Luminoso play fusion with their own unique flavor

Interesting rhythmic interplay and improvisation from Jonas Cambien (prepared piano) and Adrian Fiskum Myhr (double bass). The prepared piano mixed with arco overtones from the bass may remind some of John Cage and/or African music.

Reedist Kamasi Washington became a star in one night after release of his triple-CD debut album few years ago. I tried hardly (and more than once) to listen it till the end but never succeeded. Not because it was a free form abstract cacophony (it looks regular listener afraid of it most of all in jazz and it's understandable). No, it was just a bulky collection of simple pop-tunes, sometimes with rock attributes ("spices" in a soup?), easy listening trying to satisfy widest tastes. It looks Kamasi quite succeeded in it, so now we have his second work on shelves.
Mini LP, released as next step to success after successful triple debut sounds probably a bit strange, reasons are mostly technical I expect (the material used was originally written for museum exposition's soundtrack, plus OST for short video "Truth"). In all cases, that's a positive side of new release - based on same formula as the debut was, it's significantly shorter what makes it much more accessible). The opener sounds as if it comes from "La La Land" OST, but rest of the album represents mostly over-orchestrated easy listening tunes with repeating simple straight melodies.

Mark Guiliana's contemporary jazz features melodic development that sometimes builds in intensity
Angiolo Tarocchi's "Unwired" is one of the best big band albums of the year so far, expansive, colorful and panoramic, you might hear bits of Herbie Hancock, Nina Rota and the avant-garde, as well as much more
Kind of Bill is a Bill Evans tribute project. On their new live album you can hear ballads, and a few uptempo numbers, played with the sort of harmonic and rhythmic innovations pioneered by Bill himself
Every now and then a new group comes along that seems to be coming from musical territory that has never been covered before, and such is the case with Amok Amor. Although this band may fit loosely under the banner of 'avant-garde' jazz, this is not free jazz, although the players do construct their compositions with a certain improvised looseness.
What seems to be happening here is that the music is built on short phrases that come from the drums, the others build their phrases on top of that construct, and the end result is a mind boggling continuous rush of quick ideas and short phrases that repeat for a short while, and then topple over each other.
Describing this music is not easy, you will just have to listen for yourself. There is definitely an influence from some of Ornette Coleman's more outside work, plus the drumming of Denardo Coleman, Rudy Royston, Jonathan Blake and John French (from Capt Beefheart) and the piano music of Cecil Taylor. Those who have listened to the wide array of ancient traditional African music will also hear some familiar elements. Plus, the witty sass and brevity of early be-bop could be seen as an aesthetic influence too. Imagine a cross between extreme be-bop and 'Trout Mask Replica' played on a damaged record that gets stuck and skips a lot and you may be close to this group's sound.
This is a musical approach that is very original, whether or not this band becomes a lasting influence remains to be seen. Even if you don't enjoy this music, you owe it to yourself to at least check this out.
Zachary Gvirtzman cites Monk, Keith Jarrett and Craig Taborn as influences on these mostly meditative solo piano improvs that often sound like contemporary concert hall music
Things to Sounds play classic free improvisation with an emphasis on busyness. "Highly energetic and dense textures stand next to carefully placed filigree actions"

Part of that young hip socially relevant crowd that includes Kamasi Washington, Matana Roberts and Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, trumpeter Jaimie Branch plays stripped down street savvy modern fusion with roots in hip-hop and indie post-punk culture. If the sort of young people who squat vacant buildings listen to anything jazzy, it would probably be Jaimie.
