Sloth Racket plays avant-garde jazz rooted in the sounds of classic free jazz, but they use techniques such as graphic notation to build their compositions. The pieces range from collections of minute sounds to sections of greater intensity. Expect to hear all the different sounds and effects a saxophone can produce.

Guilhelm Flouzat is usually known for his contemporary originals, on his new album he decided to take on a different challenge and record some lesser known standards with pianist Sullivan Fortner and bassist Desmond White. Their take on these tunes is refreshingly original and personal. Fortner definitely has his own voice, but he may sometimes recall Ahmad Jamal in his relaxed approach.

Jason Stein walks a fine line between modern post bop and the avant-garde with shades of Lennie Tristano, Ornette and Erik Dolphy to boot. No filler or gimmicks, pure jazz for those who like it that way. The double horn solos with Keefe Jackson are a gas!

Pete Malinverni is one of the more interesting pianists today, his elastic phrasing may remind some of Monk, Herbie Nichols or Brad Mehldau.

Dave Rempis' first solo record, expect plenty of extended technique on alto, tenor and baritone saxophones.
