Eighth in a continuing curatorial series that specializes in teaming improvisers from France with their stateside counterparts, A Pride of Lions is arguably among the most overtly enticing entry in terms of eminence of roster. The guiding logistical apparatus that led to its existence is aptly-called The Bridge and exists as a virtual network for organizing concert and tour opportunities born of trans-Atlantic collaboration. All-Star is an antiquated assignation in jazz-based music, one formerly the bailiwick of Norman Granz Presents Jazz at the Philharmonic excess and ad hoc groupings geared toward individualistic fireworks over ensemble expression. This band, while comprised of unquestionable heavyweights, arrives from a very different grillwork of artistic connections and priorities.
