Pianist Aki Rissanen has been quickly rising among the top forces of the instrument in Finnish Jazz. An immensely productive artist, Rissanen has released three albums in a short period of time. Equally remarkable is the different scopes of each of the releases. La Lumière Noire for AEON/ Ilma Records is an experimental body of work featuring Rissanen on solo on piano, Semplice for the Alba label is a duo effort with Belgian sax player Robin Verheyen, and the latest one, Beautiful Anxiety for KSJAZZ, is essentially a quartet and trio album featuring an international cast of players including Rick Margitza and Magnus Broo.
Rissanen’s compositions on the record truly come across as beautiful examples of vivid contemporary maintream jazz. The album by the young pianist and his group is remarkably strong, especially when considering that it is his fist album as a band leader to date.
