Andrew Oliver is a pianist, composer, and occasional trumpeter from Portland, Oregon. He started piano at the age of 3, and grew up playing classical piano and cello, before delving into the realm of improvised music while in high school. He lived in New Orleans from 2002 until 2005, where he studied jazz at Loyola University. After evacuating from Hurricane Katrina in the summer of 2005, he returned to Portland and resumed his studies at Portland State University.
His original group, the Andrew Oliver Sextet released 2 albums to critical acclaim in the Northwest (“Otis Stomp” on Diatic Records and “82% Chance of Rain” on OA2) before disbanding in 2010. After traveling to Africa in 2007 as part of the U.S. State Department’s “Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad” program, Andrew founded The Kora Band, a Seattle-based group blending West African traditions and jazz, featuring Kane Mathis
