There’s important history behind the existence of Art “Turk” Burton and Congo Square, out with a superbly crafted jazz album in the realm of “African Classical Music,” as the conga player describes it.
Spirits: Then & Now featuring Burton on conga drums and saxophonist Ari Brown — among many other original artists — came out earlier this month. While the album offers a spare eight tracks total, the wealth of stories on a distinctively indigenous, ancient beat more than makes up.
Growing up around Chicago, Burton himself went from drums to basketball back to drums, namely congas and bongos, in the span of a young man’s early education. When he went back to playing music, by his late teens, he and his group found themselves competing against the Jackson-5 at a national talent contest.
