Brian Burman was born in pre-Schwarzenegger California, and grew up in Los Gatos, that shopper's paradise at the edge of Silicon Valley where "Pet Rocks" were invented. Though drawing cartoons from earliest childhood, his dream was to become a great ventriloquist in the tradition of Charlie McCarthy and Danny O'Day. In his early years of intensive study, he repeatedly came up against the barrier of not being able to speak without moving the lips. Practicing daily despite this handicap, his plight was further complicated when Reagan and Bill Bennett slashed student aid in 1981, and he was forced to abandon his dreams and sell his beloved dummy (an obvious replica of Howdy Doody painted to look Italian, affectionately named "il Gipperino").
He was then enrolled in Humboldt State University, studying painting, sculpture, philosophy and psychology. At the same time he played piano in school jazz ensembles, and worked as a
