American jazz pianist and clarinetist, born November 28, 1943 in Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota, USA. Died August 14, 2022. After playing locally, he moved to Minneapolis and St. Paul, joining the Hall brothers' New Orleans Jazz Band in 1962; the group worked for more than 20 years at the Mendota Emporium. Thompson also led a trio, which in 1974 began a 12-year engagement with Garrison Keillor's radio show "A Prairie Home Companion". In the 1980s frequently led his King Oliver Centennial Band in Europe.

One of the top pre-bop pianists to be active during the past 30 years, Butch Thompson's piano playing stretches from Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson to swing; he is also an excellent (if occasional) New Orleans-style clarinetist.
