Carrie Wicks studied the viola from second through fourth grade in Summit, NJ, while entertaining her mother's guests w/ soulfully sung renditions of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. Her favorite band in third grade was The Doors; she learned how to read by reading the poetry of Jim Morrison. Then her family moved to Dorset, Vermont, where they didn't have string instruments in school, so she picked up the cornet because that was what her newest friend at the time was playing. For three years, through eighth grade, she sang in a church choir and took some piano lessons, after getting as far as she could in teaching herself from those little red books. Her favorite albums back then were Michael Jackson's Off the Wall and The Doors' Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine. She played the cornet through sophomore year in the high school's jazz band, until it wasn't "cool" anymore
