David was born and brought up in the suburbs of SW London. Both his parents were music teachers and to him music was just a way of life - lessons, orchestra rehearsals, music courses, folk music gigs were everyday things. By 11 he was good enough on the cello to get a scholarship to a glorified grammar school (which ensured he got enough A levels to go on to university) but after some years he took up a typical rebellious approach and gave up the classical music to take up punk and rock music now playing the bass guitar.
Within a few years he was pretty competent and playing rock gigs on the London circuit, including venues like the Hammersmith Odeon.
