Composer and saxophonist David Boykin represents the future present of the Chicago jazz sound. His compositions are hard swinging, lyrical, and melodic while simultaneouly challenging previous limits of rhythmic and harmonic complexity. He posesses that big full sound common to Chicago tenor saxophonist and boundless energy. emotional expressiveness, energy, and technical proficiency when soloing to a most dynamic effect. David Boykin first began studying music in1991 with the clarinet at the age of 21, and in just over a decade he has accomplished what could be a lifetime of achievements for many in his field.
Since 1997 he has released four album length recordings under his own name. Leading bands varying in size from one to thirteen pieces, he has performed at major international jazz festivals, and extensively throughout Chicago. He has also performed in Paris France, Moscow and Yaroslavl Russia, New York City, Pittsburgh, and Detroit.
