Ensemble Novo is a six-piece Philadelphia-based instrumental group that's developed a reputation for fresh, inviting updates of the music of Brazil. Blue Night, the Ensemble Novo debut, features supercharged versions of long-beloved Brazilian classics -- among them, "Berimbau," "Tristeza" and "Samba de Orfeu" -- as well as lesser-known but exquisite works like "Wind" by Hermeto Pascoal and "Pr'um Samba" by Egberto Gismonti. Two songs on the album ("Church is Where You Are" and "Grace Engine No. 1") were written by saxophonist Tom Moon, whose 2011 release Into the Ojala by Moon Hotel Lounge Project was hailed by USA Today as evocative of "a bygone era of nightlife sophistication." The album was recorded live at Turtle Studios in Philadelphia, and produced by Jeff Hiatt. Enter the "luxe chill" realm of Ensemble Novo! The dancefloor is open!
