Israeli-born trumpeter Itamar Borochov is a gifted improvisor known for his expansive style of jazz that brings together his love of Sephardic Jewish music, Arabic maqam, and modal post-bop. Following a move to New York in 2007, Borochov gained wider recognition with his 2014 quartet album Outset and 2016 follow-up Boomerang.
Born in Jaffa, Israel, Borochov grew up in a creative family the son of noted musician Yisrael Borochov and the brother of bassist Avri Borochov. Growing up, he was exposed to a range of sounds from Sephardic music in his synagogue to Middle Eastern and North African maqams, as well as Mizrahi, Ashkenazi, and other Israeli traditions. He first began playing the trumpet around age 11 and quickly developed a love of jazz.
