Jerseyband, a collective of two tenor saxes, baritone sax, trumpet, bass, guitar, and drums play what they call, "lungcore" - A new genre that infuses a horn-driven band with heavy metal sensibilities. Originating in 1999, Jerseyband experiments with principles and textures unconventional to the standard jazz style such as avoiding the traditional "head solo head" song forms, the use of vocal screaming, slap tongue, and perverse orchestration i.e. imagine three saxophones each representing the bottom three strings of one distorted guitar playing power chords. Although they're serious in their dedication to the flawless execution of whirlwind passages consisting of odd rhythms and difficult runs, an air of humor always pervades throughout their set. Living by the motto,"don't take yourself too seriously", their performances include the use of costumes, impromptu stage choreography and the occasional interpretive dance.
