Joe Wilder, who has died aged 92, was a trumpeter whose name was little known, even to many jazz lovers, but revered among his fellow musicians. A man of modesty and dignity, he was renowned for the beauty of his tone as a soloist, and for his utter reliability as an ensemble player; he was always to be found in the very best musical company, whether it was Count Basie’s band or the New York Philharmonic. Joseph Benjamin Wilder was born on February 22 1922 in Colwyn, Pennsylvania. His father, a bass player, led a popular local dance band and his elder brother also played the bass.
