21st Century Modern / Post Bop / Jazz Related Improv/Composition • Norway
My name is Kjetil Jerve, and I was born and raised in the coastal town of Ålesund in Norway. First immersed in classical music and Elton John, my discovery of improvised music has led my life in unexpected ways, where I now perform regularly with personal peers of jazz, techno, avantgarde, ambient music, poetry and other art mediums. What I cherish about this practice is that people all over seem to seek the depth of experience, an urge to dive into the deep unknown. Three distinct saxophone players that I shared stages with can attest to this common analogy: Tony Malaby, Jimmy Halperin and John Butcher. Whenever I get back to my studio in Oslo I practice the standards, and it’s always fascinating to hear how jazz can absorb and assimilate this experience from such contrasting cultures, and bring my musical understanding to accept further interest.
