The band consist of two guitars, a bass, a tenor saxophone and a set of bongos. It features two members of wheels: Neil (guitar) and Adam (drums) – but the sound, equally wonderful, is a million miles from the rambling, alternative folk whimsy of that band. Speaking of Wheels, Will of Wheels, draws up and explains Lapis Lazuli are named after “some weird rock…thing”. So that cleared that mystery up. Kind of. Lapis Lazuli’s music shouldn’t work. Not in the middle of a field at three in the afternoon. Probably not any time, anywhere. There was a reason why Spinal Tap’s new acid jazz direction was derided towards the end of the film of that band’s name. Freaked out acid jazz is something to be laughed at at best, run away from – and at great speed – at worst. But this? This is something different. It’s crazy. It’s energetic.
