At the age of 6, he started his first piano lessons with private teachers such as; Vilma Graça, Sónia Maria Vieira, Sérgio Vienna, Leida Swarzman and Marcelo Alvarenga, which contributed to the development of their maturity and technical skills. In 1976, he studied Orchestration at the Mannes School of Music in New York. Two years later, Luiz Avellar began a long career as a pianist and arranger for great names in Brazilian music, including Djavan, Gal Costa, Simone and Milton Nascimento. In parallel, the pianist appears alongside a wide variety of names from the international scene, Billy Cobham, Toots Thielemanns, Enrico Rava, Phil Woods, Ernie Watts, Wayne Shorter, Flora Purim and Airto Moreira, are some references.
