Mimika Mak Murtic Ensemble is a London-based contemporary 8 – 20 piece Concept Avant Gard ensemble. The ensemble is noted for their cinematic theme based music, young contemporary jazz musicians and brass orchestrations.
Mimika was formed in 2010 by the Croatian composer and saxophonist Mak Murtic. Initially a 9 piece Balkan influenced jazz group with strings, clarinets, brass, rhythm section and vocals, the band evolved into a small orchestra with stronger urban and contemporary influences to feature brass, woodwinds, vocals, a full rhythm section (including the tuba) and recently a narrator with all the band members acting theatrical roles as well as playing their instruments.
After premiering their first Suite, From Scratch To Structure, about human prehistoric migrations, Mimika’s music was dubbed as Balkan Space Jazz by London’s Time Out Magazine.
