Named after the Hindi term for "new falcon," Naya Baaz is a collaborative ensemble known for their wildly kinetic, harmonically adventurous combination of jazz-fusion guitar and Hindustani sitar traditions. They debuted their globally minded fusion sound on 2023's Charm.
Formed in 2021, Naya Baaz is co-led by Pakistani-born guitarist Rez Abbasi and American sitar virtuoso Josh Feinberg. Born in Karachi, Abbasi grew up in California where he started playing guitar at age 11. Initially interested in jazz and rock, he studied at both the University of Southern California and Manhattan School of Music. By the late '80s, he had developed a passion for the tabla and eventually spent time studying in India with tabla master Ustad Allah Rakha. Since then, he has continued to fuse Eastern and Western traditions, working with players like Rudresh Mahanthappa, Vijay Iyer, Gary Versace, and others, including his wife, singer Kiran Ahluwalia.
