Ochion Jewell is a jazz saxophonist and composer from Appalachian Kentucky. He studied classical music at the University of Louisville but became frustrated enough by the confinement of that tradition to rebel to jazz and improvised music. After studying jazz, free improvisation and composition at California Institute of the Arts, he moved to New York City.
Ochion's debut album "First Suite for Quartet" was released by Mythology Records in 2010 to positive acclaim. The album was heralded by the New York City Jazz Record as "an ambitious, beautifully rendered album...exhilarating in every facet."
Ochion lives in Brooklyn and also teaches for the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. He has performed professionally with Charlie Haden and Joe LaBarbera, has toured Europe and South America and performed at PS1 (MOMA), the Alex Theater and REDCAT (L.A.) and the Palace Theater (Louisville).
