Phil Broadhurst teaches jazz performance, piano, composition and history, and runs the jazz department at the Albany campus.
Phil is active as a professional jazz pianist and composer, and writes and presents The Art of Jazz weekly on Concert FM. In 2001 he became the first jazz musician to be awarded the MNZM for services to jazz.
Born in the UK, Phil studied jazz at Berklee College in Boston, then returned to New Zealand and formed the celebrated 80s group Sustenance. who recorded four albums. He has been pianist for the George Chisholm Quintet, the Brian Smith Quartet, and led his own trio with Andy Brown and Frank Gibson. Their albums, Iris and Fabric were recently reissued by Ode Records.
Phil played regularly at Auckland's premiere jazz venue, the London Bar, for many years. His numerous credits include work in the US, UK and other foreign parts, and collaborations with many jazz greats
