Russ Nolan, in his virtuosic improvisations on soprano and tenor saxophones and in his challenging compositions and arrangements, has achieved a remarkable balance between melody, harmony, and rhythm. This rare attribute is evident throughout Relentless, the Illinois-born, New York–based musician’s fourth CD for his own Rhinoceruss Music label, on which he is joined by 2013 Grammynominated Latin jazz pianist Manuel Valera. Bassist Michael O’Brien and drummer Brian Fishler, both of whom played on Nolan’s critically acclaimed 2012 release Tell Me, round out the rhythm section, to which percussionist Yasuyo Kimura contributes additional Latin spice to three of the eight selections.
