The original Scorch Trio came about as the result of Raoul Björkenheim and Ingebrigt Flaten meeting at the Jyväskylä Summer Jazz Festival. Flaten travelled to Finland in 2000 with his partner from Elements, the drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, for several concerts and a recording for the finnish national radio YLE with Björkenheim. That soon led to other gigs in Scandinavia, and eventually the trio recorded three albums for the Norwegian label Rune Grammofon: Scorch Trio (2002), Luggumt (2004) and Brolt (2006). During those years the trio played many European festivals, as well as club dates in the US, Canada and Japan. They gained a reputation for delivering a fiercely improvised power jazz, their music often being compared to that of Hendrix’s Band of Gypsies, Blood Ulmer and Ornette Coleman. In 2008 Paal left the trio, and Frank Rosaly, a member of Flaten’s quintet, jumped on board to record their new album
