After four albums during the 2000s, Markus Stauss' "broken consort" re-emerged on AltrOck as a fiery avant jazz quintet in 2013.
A leader of and participant in diverse free jazz, avant rock, and modern chamber ensembles since the 1970s, Swiss saxophonist Markus Stauss founded the Spaltklang quartet in 2001. In German, Spaltklang roughly translates as "split sound," reflecting Stauss' interest in forming a 21st century incarnation of the Baroque era "broken consort" -- that is, a group featuring both wind and string instruments. Of course, combining winds and strings could hardly be considered revolutionary, but in the case of Spaltklang, the manner in which the group drew from and combined separate musical traditions -- not merely separate families of instruments -- was in fact quite unique.
