Virtuoso modern jazz pianist and composer Stuart McCowan offers a unique approach to composition and improvisation. Stuart has played with artists as wide-ranging as Ari Hoenig, Matt Brewer, Sandy Evans and Stefon Harris. His compositions, inspired by such great modern European trios as Phronesis, Mammal Hands and GoGo Penguin, balance complexity in rhythm with simplicity in melody and harmony. Stuart’s performances are energised, fuelled by an insatiable desire to discover and create new musical experiences.
Stuart began his musical education at Scotch College in Perth, Western Australia, where he had the privilege of studying under Australian jazz great Garry Lee. Lee immersed Stuart in the jazz tradition, and encouraged him to pursue the music of the more soft-hearted pianists of the last 50 years.
