A dropout of Tokyo University of the Arts and former band member of George Kawaguchi and Susumu Sawada, Shibuya has lent his hand in the production of numerous popular songs, commercials and movies. In 1975 he started his own trio. In the late 80s he focused efforts on the Takeshi Shibuya Orchestra, distancing himself from the prototypical Big Band mold of a bygone era, and was praised for taking a more humanistic approach as a composer. Since 1999, Shibuya has been part of a Duke Ellington revival group called "Essential Ellington," releasing two albums. In 2000, Shibuya received a Japanese Academy award in music for his work on the movie "Kiraware Matsuko no Issho".
