The Dutch/German trio Torque utilizes a style of improvisation that emphasizes the trio as a coherent unit. While rooted in contemporary jazz, the influences of pop music and classical music can’t be overheard. Pianist Koen Schalkwijk, who contributes the majority of the lyrical compositions, could be seen on a variety of well-known stages like the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Bimhuis. Mathias Polligkeit on the bass and Antoine Duijkers on the drums are supplying a solid rhythmic foundation on which the compositions are evolved.
In 2011, their first album Forward has been released on Neuklang records and has garnered positive reviews in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. The music has been featured on Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandradio Kultur, HR2 Kultur, NDR Info, SR2, Radio Bremen, Radio 6, 3voor12 (VPRO) and 3sat among others.
