Ulrich "Uli" Gumpert (born January 26, 1945 in Jena ) is a German jazz musician. The pianist, organist, and composer developed a special style of music.
Gumpert received piano lessons from his father Willy Gumpert from 1952 to 1959. From 1961 he studied French horn at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Weimar and also played with the Jenaer Oldtimers. In 1964 he was expelled from the university due to unsatisfactory performance in the subject of Marxism-Leninism. In 1966 Gumpert moved to East Berlin. He continued his studies in piano from 1967 to 1968 at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin, which he then dropped out of. From 1968 to 1970 he was a guest student in the subjects theory and composition. Between 1970 and 1973 Gumpert acquired his professional license as a pianist at the Friedrichshain Music School.
