The brainchild of producer, guitarist, and recording engineer Bob Ward, VOODOO DOGS manages to concoct an intoxicating brew, with equal parts of the modern jazz spirit mixed along with the more modern strains of hip hop and funk. Larry Goldings also plays a big part in the presentation of the music here, heard not only on B-3 organ but also electric piano and synthesizers. The results are immediately danceable but also just plain fun to listen to. Cuts like "Uganda" and "Spellbound" toy with a "world music" attitude, sporting Ward’s samples and tape loops. "You Dig" finds vibist Joe Locke making a cameo, while many of the other tracks also feature horns as a tasty compliment to the core groove. Making a strong case for the intelligent use of electronics, Ward and Goldings pull off VOODOO DOGS without a hint of the sappy or sterile commerciality that hampers much of what read more...
