WEATHER REPORT Live At Montreux 1976

The mid 70's was the pinnacle for jazz fusion and this concert captures the energy and excitement of the era. The artists were playing in front of large crowds and making money. This band evolved from the post bop of the 60's and was super talented. The leader was a keyboard virtuoso and he wanted to create a new sound fusing jazz with rock. Weather Report actually had hits played on the radio, which was unheard of for a jazz band. This is not traditional jazz, as this was the electronic era and the musicians wanted to crank it up and play with synths and feedback. The 70's was the decade of experimentation in all forms of music and they took the jazz format to its limit. On bass the incredible artist of Jaco Pastorius, who had only recently joined the band, makes his mark with a vengeance. He plays as a true great bassist with feel and funkiness. This music is a direct offshoot of the Miles Davis school of music. It is highly recommended for the art it conveys. 5 stars.

PHAROAH SANDERS Live at the East

This may be the greatest jazz album ever released as it says everything about jazz in 40 minutes and doesn't hold back. This is an incredible album and if you want me to talk about it for at least 100 words, I have no problem. It is emotional and very spiritual and quite intellectual. It has everything that one could want in a music presentation. and it goes beyond music to the realm of the heart. I bought this record in the 80's when I was a young man and I am now 62 years old and I still want to listen to it and get something out of it, which is art.

PAT METHENY 80/81

This album is quite a departure from his earlier work for ECM. He is collaborating with stellar musicians listed on the cover. It is a laid back session, double album, with most of the material being pleasant saxophone motifs with acoustic guitar and electric guitar leads. It's on the folk side with Pat's clever sense of melody and beautiful harmony. On side three they break out to more open ideas, which is the name of the track, and then pretty scattered. Side four goes back to a mid western folk jazz feel. The whole concept is acoustic guitar with the sax as the leader and the bass and drums playing great support. Four stars.

SOFT MACHINE Switzerland 1974

A document of the band in the summer of 1974 as fusion was becoming popular with an ever increasing audience. This band were pioneers in jazz/rock and adding an electric guitarist increased attention with fans of virtuosity in the guitar world. Allan Holdsworth was a phenomenal guitarist and this concert shows his strength with the band. Anyone who loves the Soft Machine and their English Jazz will find this era of the band special. They were promoting the album Bundles, which was a standout release in the catalog of a band which experimented with the outer edges of fusion and took the genre into uncharted territory.

ALLAN HOLDSWORTH Leverkusen '97

The series of live recordings recently released for Allan and his various incarnations of trios and quartets are outstanding. This one from 1997 shows Allan in Germany with Chad and Dave. The album is dedicated to Allan and the late Dave Carpenter (1959 - 2008). The first track: The Sixteen Men of Tain is one of Allan's best late compositions. He also includes his classic tracks such as Letters of Marque, Looking Glass and House of Mirrors. Phenomenal musicianship permeates this session. For any fan of electric jazz guitar this is a must have. The legato is flying. 4.25 stars
