ROCK CANDY FUNK PARTY We Want Groove

Album · 2013 · Funk Jazz

The name of the group and the name of the album speak for themselves. Sinewy blues/rock guitar lines blend with funky keys, bass, and drums to excite the listener on what surely is jazz's best party record of 2013. Part of the charm is that until this release nobody would have thought of Joe Bonamassa as a jazz musician, but his presence puts this album over the top in terms of virtuosity. This would have been a fine release in 1974, but top notch recording techniques and old school spirit make this a must listen for all fans of groove.

ROCK CANDY FUNK PARTY Groove Is King

Album · 2015 · Funk Jazz

Rock Candy Funk Party's second long player, Groove is King, surely lives up to it's title. Rock, blues, funky R&B mix with bits of electronica to make a whole that's unmistakably jazz. Short songs mesh with extended pieces seamlessly to create a record that rewards repeated concentration while also serving as a terrific party record. Master guitarist Joe Bonamossa is the most well known musician among this collective, however they are all extremely accomplished and, following the heels of their 2013 debut and 2014 double disc live set, continue to add a punctuation mark to the funky rock and roll jazz fusion pantheon. If you haven't heard these guys, you're missing out.

MICHAEL ZENTNER Present Time

Album · 1983 · Jazz Related Rock
Cover art Buy this album from MMA partners
If this site were a rock site I'd definitely give this album 5 stars. It does fit squarely into the jazz related rock subgenre, however this recording is Zentner's attempt to add his fingerprints to the progressive rock fueled Canterbury canon. As founding member of seminal U.S. artists the Muffins, Michael left before their late 70 masterpiece of the Canterbury style, Manna/Mirage, was recorded and released.

This album has one of the most diverse, eclectic, and talented artists I've ever seen on an album from one artist in this style of music. One look from a progressive music fan at the list of musicians reveals several giants of the genre. It even features saxaphone from jazz legend Carla Bley, who was quite well established as of this recording.

It's tough to find, but if you like adventurous rock with a jazz undercurrent, you should check this one out. The obscurity factor is off the charts as well. This recording deserves to be at least as well known as lesser Canterbury bands like Ain Soph or Picchio Dal Pozzo. Present Time really is a lost classic that deserves a wider audience.

CHARLES KYNARD Woga

Album · 1972 · Funk Jazz
Cover art Buy this album from MMA partners
Charles Kynard never burns like his Hammond B3 contemporaries, but he has the funkiest band around. Chuck Rainey and Paul Humphrey highlight a crack band that funktify jazz like few others. "Slop Jar", "Rock Steady" and especially the extended album closer, "Shout", highlight this tremendously underrated set. Beat aficianados and crate diggers are sure to find a ton to like in this gem. Charles Kynard didn't record too often, and listening to this album one wonders if he couldn't have had a career renaissance like Dr Lonnie Smith or Jimmy McGriff. Badass album cover also helps. See if your local vinyl store has it.

THE GREYBOY ALLSTARS West Coast Boogaloo (with Fred Wesley)

Album · 1994 · Funk Jazz
Cover art Buy this album from MMA partners
The Greyboy AllStars debut album, West Coast Boogaloo, is a fresh reinvention of an old jazz theme - chill grooves fortified with killer musicianship make for great listening. in 2016, these guys are well known. In 1995, it was the presence of Fred Wesley of James Brown fame that lent name credibility to this project. It still went unnoticed, but is a terrific addition to those who like their jazz straight with a smooth chaser. "Tenor Man" would become saxman Karl Denson's signature song. These guys have become legends on the jam band circuit. The more jazz less funk formula works for them. This album should interest all collectors from the Sonny Stitt/Groove Holmes/Rusty Bryant Prestige Records era of the '60's and '70's. Wesley is in top form and his funky jazz chops blend well with the young musicians from California.
