Hello friends, supporters, music listeners, fellow educators, and musicians! Thank you so much for checking out my fundraising campaign at http://kck.st/3szOvBd and album preview. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Jared Hall and I'm a trumpeter and composer based in Seattle, Washington. I'm currently working on completing my second studio album as a leader titled "Seen on the Scene".
My first album, "Hallways", received critical acclaim in publications, such as All About Jazz, Earshot Jazz, and Jazziz, as well as significant radio play nationally and internationally. My sophomore album will be a strong second statement as a musician and artist dedicated to this creative, expressive, African American based artform. With the music already written, recorded, mixed and mastered, this album is projected for release in June 2021 on Origin Records.
The Music
The music on this album includes new originals (Seen on the Scene, Force for Good, Farewell, Thinker, Coral Way), arrangements (Theme from Love Story, Mating Call), and classic standards (If You Could See Me Now (with an extra extended take)).
This album has been a few years in the making. With the COVID 19 pandemic, I have mustered up the time and focus to finally get this music out. As a performing musician severely affected by the pandemic (live music performance in Washington State is non-existent), you can imagine the financial burden of trying to release music to the world.
Recording Personnel
The musicians on the album feature the rhythm section I have written for and performed with regularly since my 2015 arrival to Seattle, including John Hansen (piano), Michael Glynn (bass), and Matt Jorgensen (drums). The album also includes alto saxophonist Vincent Herring who was in Seattle at the time of recording, while we also performed around the region and held educational clinics together.
Studios, Engineers, Mixing, and Mastering
The one-day recording session was held at Studio X - Seattle, WA with engineer Reed Ruddy as one of the last sessions before their move from 4th Avenue. An additional studio used on the album includes Studio Litho - Seatte, WA with engineer Floyd Reitsma. Mixing and mastering was completed by Dave Darlington at Bass Hit Studio - NYC, with additional mixing by Brian Lynch at Hollistic MusicWorks Studio - Miami, FL.
Why Kickstarter?
Why crowd-fund? When enough listeners pre-pay for their copy of the album, it not only provides the necessary funds for us to complete it, but it also gets them an inside peak into the making of the album, many special rewards, and a chance to check out the album a month before its official release date!
For a minimum contribution of $10 you are essentially ordering this album in advance (digital download). If you can give more, we have some other great rewards (check them out to the right). Albums cost a lot of money to record, design, create, support song licensing, and publicize. The unfortunate truth is that most small record companies do not pay for the recording, which leaves the burden on the musicians to not only write, rehearse and record the music, but to raise the funds to make it all possible.
Risks and challenges
Risks and Challenges
Working and living as an artist during COVID is challenging. Still, I'm making this album a top priority and plan to see it through to the end no matter what happens. If we are not able to reach our funding goal, we will not receive the money that has been pledged. This means there will be no album or that it will need to be privately funded, which could take considerably longer. If we are funded, there could be other challenges. There could certainly be delays, since we are using a lot of different services and contractors to produce our album - this is a multi-step process with lots of components that have to come together to deliver a completed CD project. In any case, if funded, the rewards will be delivered, perhaps earlier or a little later than the anticipated dates, guaranteed.
