Ahead of his forthcoming album 'I THINK I'M GOOD', Kassa Overall drops his second track for Brownswood, another showcase of the Seattle-raised, Brooklyn-based artist’s singular sound. A grand, reflective track, ‘Show Me A Prison’, is a cover version of Phil Ochs' “There but for Fortune" (made famous by Joan Baez). The track sees him muse on injustice in the US prison system and his ongoing grapples with his mental health. It also features legendary activist and scholar Angela Davis, who contributes an especially recorded cameo.
Overall released his debut album, “Go Get Ice Cream and Listen to Jazz” in January and, according to Time Out New York, he is “a Renaissance man: part chopsy, super-funky jazz drummer, and part rising producer-MC.”
The drummer and producer shows shades of Karriem Riggins, Madlib and Flying Lotus, fusing the sounds of hip-hop, jazz, and soul to convey the gravity and hope of struggle of an African-American artist.
