Mal Waldron Trio playing Free at Last, 1969.
Trio being composed by (b) Isla Eckinger, (d) Clarence Becton and (p) the snakiest, mostly hunting, sight seeking, one amongst the notes : the mighty Mal Waldron.
6 pieces filled with his story. Relentless, Mal crushes. Mal goes borderline, borderscene, borderspeed, in an unshallow way. You gotta love these violent Mal's returns spread all along the tracks : piano never went this proficiently minimal, giving a lot when played a few and going wildely strained when jumped at. Delivering a crucial shuffle on drums, Clarence Becton is bound to stage thanks to bass player Isla Eckinger holding all by himself a straight groove into the dark.
No words can describe how lacking becomes something in here. Chasing the missing, -sense, -felt, -ryme, all put together into a shattered craze, longly quested, roughly obtained : freedom. As such the cover artwork is a masterpiece.
Wordwidely known jazz label, ECM, opened business in Munich by releasing this record as its first. One other proof, if needed, of tightness.
