JUST FOR ONE DAY spazia tra jazz contemporaneo e rock.

LINER NOTES
Max De Aloe Quartet, that generously carries my name but which is in reality the fruit of an synergetic and collaborative workshop of four musicians, is almost in its 15th year of activity — years that have seen us grow an incredible amount both together and thanks to our joint work with many other musicians and ensembles. Ours is a group that has always looked beyond jazz, not because of pretension or snobbery but out of genuine expressive necessity, in the search for a sound. David Bowie belongs to a world of rock that has fascinated us since we were kids.
The story behind “Just For One Day”, like so many things during this bizarre year, was influenced by the experience of being in lockdown due to Covid 19.
Just as we were supposed to be going into the recording studio, I fell victim to Covid 19 and was bedridden for more than a month followed by a long recovery period in which I experienced various respiratory problems. Definitely not the ideal situation for someone who plays a wind instrument. The most sensible thing to do would have been to make a full recovery before taking up music again, much less a recording project, but for a musician, music is therapy. I wanted to get back to playing live as soon as possible and to record this work. After all, I’ve never been drawn to the idea of perfection in music but rather its visceral qualities, authenticity and expressive urgency.
A few days before going into the studio, I wrote the ballad “52”. I turned fifty-two years old on March 18, 2020. It’s the date in Italy that will be dedicated to the memory of the victims of Covid 19 and it coincides with the first appearance of the virus’ most severe symptoms in me.
Recording this CD while feeling fatigue, shortness of breath and fragility was a profound experience for which I am grateful.
There are points in the recording where I can hear that I could have given more but this is my snapshot of the day, without the facade of “Photoshop”. An album recorded live in a single day.
“Just For One Day” is a revisitation of works by David Bowie but also original music which was inspired by the world of the Thin White Duke. The song “Lazarus” plays a central role. It’s a powerful, devastating testament that Bowie wrote knowing he had only a few months left to live.
I hope that this work moves you as much as it moved us during playback the day after we recorded it.
Happy Listening.
