Double bassist Charlie Haden is probably better known for his collaborations with Ornette Coleman, Keith Jarrett or Pat Metheny, but as a leader he recorded many albums that cover a wide spectrum of genres from bop to avant-garde jazz.
"Etudes" is an excellent album of acoustic piano trio jazz - Haden with pianist Geri Allen and drummer Paul Motian play their versions of classic tunes plus some originals.
Not often can you find better interplay between three musicians - the album's music is quite warm, technically perfect and played with the intimate atmosphere of "classic jazz".
At the same time, this is not the atmosphere of a late night club, the musicians successfully strike a balance somewhere in between a small concert hall and a weekend jazz club afternoon spirit. Quite a rare great post-bop acoustic piano trio album to be coming from the late 80s.
